Cataract National Dataset approved by the Information Standards Board of the NHS
The Information Standards Board for Health and Social Care (ISB) is the board responsible for setting information standards for the NHS and adult social care in England.
The Cataract National Dataset has been approved and is now an official ISB standard. As such, it is compulsory for all NHS organisations to collect the data required. For full details of the standard, please see ISB0085
Medisoft Ophthalmology is the only system that has demonstrated the capability of collecting the Cataract National Dataset electronically as a by-product of routine clinical care.
Please visit the Cataract section to see in details how Medisoft Ophthalmology collects the Cataract National Dataset.

Digital Healthcare and Medisoft “Close the Loop” with Ophthalmology
Digital Healthcare, the leading supplier of software to UK Diabetic Retinal Screening Services (DRSS) and Medisoft, the leading supplier of software to UK Hospital Eye Services (HES), today announce that they are working in collaboration to develop “Medisoft Connector” a software module that will allow the two-way transfer of patient and outcome data between their respective systems.
Diabetic retinal screening programmes, through regularly screening diabetic patients, are successfully helping save sight loss by early identification of sight threatening disease and referring patients to Hospital Eye Services for treatment. Until now, one of the frustrations for both the screening programme and the hospital eye service is the lack of integration between their information technology systems leading to the duplication of patient data and the implementation of labour-intensive manual systems to record information and transfer outcomes data between their systems.
The development of Medisoft Connector will see an end to that duplication, manual administrative overhead and potential clinical risk by automating the transfer of appropriate and relevant information between Digital Healthcare’s OptoMize system for DRSS and Medisoft Ophthalmology in a secure and safe manner.
Kevin McDonnell, Managing Director at Digital Healthcare commented “This new development initiative is a major step forward in the drive to provide better communication between DRSS and Ophthalmology. We are delighted to be working with Medisoft to bring this product to our customers that will help them improve their efficiency, and manage risk by automating manual processes.”
David Johnston, Managing Director at Medisoft commented ‘’An interface between the clinical and administrative systems provided by Digital Healthcare for DRSS and by Medisoft for HES will help to ensure joined-up care of patients in the community and in the hospital. The screening programmes will benefit from having a complete record for any patients they refer to the hospital. Care of patients in the hospital will be enhanced as clinicians will see the full record of the patient’s care.’’

Medisoft wins Medical Futures Innovation Awards 2008
Leeds based company Medisoft, have won the overall award in ophthalmology at this year’s prestigious Medical Futures Innovation Awards.
Medisoft, leading ophthalmology health care experts, won the award with their Electronic Medical Record (EMR) computer system. This innovative computer system brings together all the clinical information about a patient’s ophthalmic medical treatment and history, including diagnostic tests, digital imaging and surgical outcomes.
Medisoft set up the system to overcome the frustration ophthalmology staff were facing of not being able to audit the outcomes of operations using paper-based notes. The system was set up to capture all of the required information around surgery, outpatient appointment and to improve the working life of doctors and most importantly patient health care.
The awards took place on Tuesday 2nd December 2008 on the grounds of the Honorary Artillery Company in central London. Jonathan Ross and Melanie Sykes presented the awards in front of a renowned audience of 800 top business leaders, medical and scientific experts, and policy makers.
An esteemed judging panel, composed of over 80 leading medical, scientific and business experts felt that Medisoft have the potential to create a national database for ophthalmology.
Dr Robert Johnston, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Medical Director for Medisoft Limited said:
“We at Medisoft are delighted to have won such an industry recognised award; it is a real accolade for all the hard work the team has put in creating the system.
“We hope to continue to grow Medisoft’s success by collaborating with the NHS in their ‘Connecting for Health’ campaign, by implementing our EMR system in all NHS eye hospitals.”
