Diabetic retinopathy
Information for UK clinicians
Every Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service is required to deliver an annual report to the Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) National Screening Committee (NSC) so that the quality of the service provided is assured.
A major part of this annual report relies on the return of data from Hospital Eye Services (HES). At present almost no screening programmes have been able to provide an accurate, comprehensive annual report using paper based processes.
If the DR structured assessment in the Medisoft system is completed on all patients referred from DR screening programmes to the HES, then Medisoft will be able to generate an annual report of all data that is required from the HES and deliver this to the screening service which can combine it with their own incomplete annual report to produce a complete report.
At sites where Medisoft can automatically link with the DR screening software this data exchange can be automated.
Medisoft is the only company to fulfil the data collection requirements defined in the Do Once and Share Diabetic Eye Disease project - part of the National Programme for IT. Such data collection is recommended by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists to improve the quality of care of patients with diabetic retinopathy and to deliver detailed audit of clinical outcomes.
Medisoft is the most widely used Ophthalmology EPR in the UK and in addition to structured DR assessment screens can collect data on the full range of ophthalmic conditions. In particular all aspects of care of patients with diabetes are catered for, such as outpatient follow up, macular and panretinal laser, vitrectomy and cataract surgery.
